Silks from ASSAM

Situated on the banks of the mighty Brahmaputra lies the state of Assam renowned for its rich hand weaving traditions. Rearing and weaving different types of silk is an integral part of Assam’s culture and dates back to 3rd century BC. The rich weaving culture of Assam is also very highly mentioned in the Arthashastra by Kautilya where he describes the silk of very supreme quality. Sericulture in Assam is mainly divided into mulberry and non-mulberry silks. Some of the famous silks from Assam are:

1. Muga silk: Muga silk is one of the most expensive silk from Assam and is known for its golden shine, which increases after every wash. It is obtained from Antheraea Assamensis and cultivated on Som (Persea bombycina) and Sualu (Litsea monopetela) trees.

2. Eri Silk: Eri Silk is that is extremely durable with thermal qualities, useful for both summers and winters. The Eri cocoon feds mostly on the leaves of castor plant. Unlike other silks, it is produced without harming the silkworms, making it an eco-friendly options and commonly worn by monks and Buddhist communities of the eastern Himalayas.

3. Pat Silk: Pat silk is also known as Mulberry Silk as the larvae of this silkworm feed exclusively on mulberry leaves. It is usually brilliant white or off-white in colour. The silk has a natural white tint and is known for its durability and glossy texture.
